BILLA Adds Handheld Scanners to Its Self-Checkout Ecosystem with shopreme and Zebra

BILLA is expanding its existing Self-Checkout ecosystem with software partner shopreme by adding Zebra Handscanners as a new customer touchpoint. The rollout builds on the established mobile Scan & Go setup, including jö loyalty, employee and exit flows, using the same POS integration.

Vienna, September 2026 – BILLA is expanding its existing Self-Checkout setup introducing Handheld Scan & Go at selected BILLA PLUS stores in Austria.

One integration, multiple Self-Checkout Touchpoints

The rollout builds on the Self-Checkout ecosystem already in place at BILLA. The BILLA Scan & Go App connects mobile self-scanning with the jö loyalty program, the shopreme Supervisor employee app for age verification, hardware management, and spot checks, and the shopreme vector Exit Terminal for checkout. The central Management Console is used to manage operations, hardware, and analytics across solutions.

With the core POS and loyalty integration already established, BILLA now adds Handheld Scan & Go through the same ecosystem, instead of creating a separate integration project.

BILLA shows how a unified architecture can make Self-Checkout easier to expand: once the central retail systems are connected, new customer journeys can build on the same technical and operational foundation.

“Customers have different preferences when it comes to Self-Checkout. With Handheld Scanners, we can offer another Scan & Go option while building on the technology and store processes we already have in place. This allows us to extend the experience without introducing a separate system for every new touchpoint.” - Kaja Grünzweig, Senior Specialist Retail Development Food & Services, BILLA

BILLA Self-Checkout at a Glance

BILLA already combines different checkout journeys depending on store format and customer needs:

  • Self-Checkout Kiosks work best for quick, small baskets.

  • The BILLA Scan & Go app enables customers to scan items as they shop using their own smartphone, which has integrated jö and biometric age verification via Face ID. Payment can be made directly in the app, including Apple & Google Pay, or at the shopreme Vector Exit Terminal.

  • The shopreme Supervisor employee app supports store teams with interventions such as spot checks and age verification.

  • Zebra PS30 handscanners now offer customers an additional self-scanning option. Shoppers can pick up a device provided by the store at the entrance, scan products while shopping and pay at the SCO without needing to rescan items.

  • The vector Exit Terminal from shopreme and umdasch The Store Makers provides a clearly defined endpoint for Scan & Go journeys, including the option to pay with a physical card.

The results of this unified experience are more choices for customers, familiar processes for store teams, and less integration effort without creating another isolated Self-Checkout system behind the scenes.

BILLA and shopreme are already looking at the next expansion steps for Handheld Scan & Go across the store network in 2027.

“It’s especially rewarding to see an existing project grow further here in our home market, Austria. One of shopreme’s key USPs is exactly this: once POS, loyalty, and operational processes are connected, retailers can add new Self-Checkout touchpoints without starting from scratch. At BILLA, we build on the same integration and workflows, making it easier to respond quickly to changing customer needs and scale new solutions across stores.” - Florian Burgstaller, CEO shopreme
