Auchan Romania introduces smart carts with shopreme snap cart and hanshow header image

Auchan Romania extends Self-Scanning Rollout with Smart Cart Pilot together with shopreme & Hanshow

Auchan Romania extends its established shopreme Self-Checkout ecosystem with shopreme snap cart software on Hanshow Smart Carts, adding a new Self-Checkout journey through the same POS and loyalty integrations, employee workflows, and central management, without a new integration project.

Bucharest, September 2026 – Auchan Romania has launched a Smart Cart pilot powered by shopreme snap cart software on Hanshow Smart Cart tablets. Twenty-four tablets are now available at one Auchan store, providing an additional Self-Checkout option alongside shopreme's mobile Scan & Go, which has been available at Auchan since 2022.

As the pilot store also operates shopreme Scan & Go, no separate integration was required for the new touchpoint. The Smart Cart journey can build on the retailer’s existing POS and loyalty integrations, employee processes, and backend environment. According to the retailer, in 2025, revenue from the Scan & Go service surged by 35% compared to 2024, transaction volumes grew by over 20%, and user baskets averaged 21 items.

A Premium Smart Cart Journey for Loyalty Customers

The Smart Cart journey begins with Auchan Romania’s loyalty card. Shoppers scan their card to unlock a tablet at the charging station, positioning access to the service as a premium benefit within the retailer’s loyalty experience.

Customers then scan products as they shop, follow their live basket on the Smart Cart screen, and directly benefit from personalized offers and loyalty benefits. At the end of the journey, the digital basket is transferred to the Self-Checkout kiosk, where the shopper completes payment.

For the current pilot, payment therefore remains within Auchan Romania’s established checkout zone. The Smart Cart solution supports payment directly on the Smart Cart screen as an optional future configuration. This gives Auchan Romania a clear extension path should the retailer later choose to move payment fully into the shopping journey.

Once checkout is complete, the physical return flow uses Hanshow’s trolley-return setup.

Familiar Processes for Store Employees

Store teams continue to use the same shopreme Supervisor employee app already supporting Auchan Romania’s mobile Scan & Go service.

Age verification, spot checks, and identification of customers who need assistance can be handled through the familiar application and established workflows. Employees therefore do not need a second app or an entirely separate intervention process for the Smart Cart pilot.

Store teams can support different customer journeys from one operational interface rather than monitoring separate systems for mobile Scan & Go, Smart Carts, and other checkout touchpoints.

One Integration, Another Self-Checkout Choice

Auchan Romania’s Smart Cart pilot demonstrates how retailers can expand their checkout mix without treating every new format as an isolated technology project.

The ecosystem approach gives the retailer flexibility to combine different Self-Checkout touchpoints according to store format and customer needs.

Smart Cart operations are incorporated into the same shopreme Management Console already used for mobile Scan & Go. This gives Auchan Romania detailed Smart Cart insights while keeping analytics, operational oversight, and hardware management within one central environment.

"Through the Smart Cart project, Auchan continues to invest in digitalizing the shopping experience, offering customers a simpler, faster, and more convenient shopping journey. The solution allows customers to scan products while shopping, keep track of their spending in real time, and complete their purchases more quickly. The integration of Smart Cart with shopreme, already used for our Scan & Go service, gives us the flexibility to develop new digital experiences while making the most of our existing technology infrastructure.” - Gabriela Gealapu, National Checkout & Scan & Go Manager | Auchan Romania

A Focused Pilot with a Scalable Foundation

Any future additions or expansion can continue to use the Self-Checkout architecture already supporting Auchan Romania’s IT landscape. For Auchan, the pilot is therefore a practical extension of an established Self-Checkout ecosystem.
