The Challenge
Having trialed a standalone Scan and Go application, REWE wanted a solution that could become part of their digital product portfolio rather than playing second fiddle to the main application. The company wanted to integrate REWE Scan and Go into their existing customer app. This would allow them to grow their digital ecosystem and integrate REWE Scan and Go with the PAYBACK loyalty scheme (a multi-partner program) and their own rewards and coupons.

Our Solution: REWE Scan and Go
powered by shopreme
Our renowned shopreme SDK proved to be the best solution to achieve the seamless integration REWE were looking for. In addition, we worked with Zebra to also run our software on the PS20 handheld scanners. Through this combination of mobile phones and handheld scanners, choosing our solution put the new REWE Scan and Go service in a great position to reach as many customers as possible.

REWE Scan & Go – directly in the REWE App
The Scan & Go functionality was fully integrated into the REWE app using the shopreme SDK, fulfilling the objective of increasing the product portfolio and growing the digital ecosystem.
To make the REWE Scan and Go journey as easy as possible for customers, the REWE app automatically detects the store through a Bluetooth Beacon. As a fallback option, customers can also check in at their REWE store by scanning a check-in code (Aztec). shopreme Scan & Go supports multiple check-in modes to suit different customer requirements and scenarios. Not everyone has Bluetooth enabled on their phone, for example.
The shopping journey itself is intuitive and clear, with customers using their own devices to go around the store and add products to their digital basket by scanning the barcodes. Customers then head to the till, where the app generates a Code (Aztec) that performs a handover to the POS system, which then processes the transaction.

Scan & Go with Handheld Scanners
As not all customers are comfortable downloading an application or using their phone to complete the shopping trip, REWE were also very keen to offer alternative ways of using Scan & Go. Therefore, REWE customers can access the Scan & Go functionality both in the REWE apps and on handheld scanner devices at the store. Thanks to our partnership with Zebra, our Scan & Go solution is fully compatible with their PS20 scanner hardware, allowing customers to choose their preferred mobile scanning solution.
Customers can use the handheld scanners anonymously with no login required. All they need to do is press the “Start now” button to unlock one of the available devices, which is indicated by a green flashing light on the scanner’s cradle. The Zebra PS20 can now be used to complete the shopping journey, scanning the barcodes of the products, and handing the transaction over to the POS. REWE uses 11,000 Zebra PS20 scanners running shopreme’s Scan & Go solution.

Loyalty Integration
REWE operates a complex loyalty and rewards scheme. A lot of work was carried out to ensure all the different coupons were compatible with Scan & Go and that customers were rewarded for their purchases. REWE had already successfully integrated PAYBACK coupons into the REWE app before. To provide a unified offering, PAYBACK coupons have also been integrated with the Scan & Go functionality in the REWE app, where customers can now easily find and apply coupons as they scan the products.

REWE Vorteilskarte
A rather specific use case in this project is the REWE Vorteilskarte feature. Since REWE have a variety of loyalty systems in place, this feature allows customers to transfer all the relevant information using a Code (Aztec) that is generated within the REWE app. This is used primarily to transfer loyalty information from a mobile phone to the Zebra handheld scanners so that customers using these devices do not miss out on their advantages. With REWE Vorteilskarte, all REWE Scan & Go clients are efficiently linked to the various loyalty programs.

Special Use Cases
REWE had some special use cases to be accounted for during the implementation, most of which we already covered out of the box.

Single Item or Multipack
Another well-known use case in grocery retail is different unit sizes. This is the case with products available in various quantities with only a single barcode, such as a single bottle of beer or a whole crate. When scanning such a barcode, a pop-up appears on the screen asking the customer to select the quantity they want to purchase.

Deposit Voucher
On a related note, these drinks often come in deposit bottles, which means that you pay a small fee per bottle as a deposit which is then returned to you when you return the bottle. The money is often returned in the form of a voucher, the barcode of which we were also able to integrate into our system so that the total is automatically reduced when the voucher is scanned. In addition, we ensured a high level of fraud prevention by making the vouchers a one-time scan.

Weight Products
Weight products are commonplace in almost every supermarket and a standard use case in the shopreme Scan & Go solution. Customers weigh products at a scale and scan the printed barcode as with any other product around the store.

It was a pleasure to work with the dedicated teams that REWE put together for this project. From start to finish, the project management was very efficient, and we were able to cover a lot of ground quickly, giving us time to work on the more intricate details of the solution while staying within the agreed timeline.

The project had a high degree of complexity due to the multi-modal support as well as deep integration of loyalty programs, both multi-partner and customer-specific. Nonetheless, the project was delivered in 11 months, including a dedicated 6-week testing phase in 4 REWE stores to trial function and performance. The learnings gathered during this period were then implemented before the full customer rollout.

The cooperation with shopreme has always been characterized by pragmatic and cooperative unity. From the first introductory presentations to the final firm agreement of cooperation, the colleagues of shopreme invested a lot in joint advance work and support. The subsequent project implementation was optimally staffed for this challenging project. The agile team delivered excellent results in developing and customizing their product for us, with strong support from the management

Current Situation & Achievements
Offering such an innovative solution to their customers allows REWE to build on its claim of being Germany’s most trusted retailer by showing they are in tune with what their customers want. It also positions them as a digital innovator in the retail industry, helping to strengthen the brand’s image.
Customers benefit from the increase in efficiency at the point of sale since they have already scanned all products and simply need to process their payment. This saves the time and effort of taking everything out of the physical basket only to repack it after the cashier has scanned it. Furthermore, features such as the live price calculation of the basket (which is always visible during Scan & Go purchases) give the customer greater control over their spending.
shopreme Scan & Go can bring a lot of benefit to the customer journey with features such as a shopping list, which can be shared with other participants, and detailed product information. These convenient features allow retailers to reach customers at home, while customers benefit from an all-inclusive solution that makes their shopping trips more enjoyable and efficient.

At shopreme, we are very happy to have delivered the Scan & Go solution REWE were looking for. Simultaneously running our solution on customer phones and Zebra handheld scanners allowed us to reach the maximum number of customers and diversify REWE’s digital portfolio. Our SDK has impressed again with deep, seamless integration and full customization. We founded shopreme because we wanted to create something we would use ourselves, and our solution for REWE has all the useful features we want to bring to customers, like the shared shopping list and price overview.

Plans Moving Forward
Following the successful launch of hundreds of Scan & Go enabled stores, REWE plan to constantly increase the number of stores offering mobile self-checkout across Germany. There is also room to create additional value for customers by implementing value-added services over time, like a recipe database.
